What did the primitive Native American cultures know about raising their youth that we have largely forgotten?
- The elders/adults play a respected role in the culture.
- Everyone is connected.
- The role of Nature is paramount.
- The role of community is paramount.
In modern American society our children often times lack true elders... their parents, teachers and other
role models are too distracted with modern gadgetry, addictions and a sense of self-importance to slow down and make
genuine contact with our youth. Our youth see this and reflect it back to us.
Are you ready to SHOW UP for the challenge?
In the fall of 2009 Monarch Center will launch the
Community Challenge Workshop Series at locations across Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico.
The Community Challenge workshops are intended to bring together a diverse group of community members in order to support,
challenge and change the ways in which we influence our youth. Monarch will facilitate as many as three workshops in
each community and then strongly encourage small groups (
Challenge Groups) to form and meet outside of the workshops. These
FREE Community Challenge workshops bring together groups of concerned adults with the common goal of helping our youth learn
how to navigate a world in which they are often manipulated and overwhelmed by materialism. We remind the adults - and support them -
in their responsibility for teaching, confronting and setting high expectations for the youth in their communities. The
Challenge Groups
continue and strengthen the work that started in the workshops. They are formed when Community Challenge Workshop participants' network
with one another as well as neighbors and other community members interested in engaging in this meaningful process. We encourage
these groups to meet at least once a month, and to stay in touch with one another in between meetings through phone calls or email.
The Monarch facilitators stay in touch with the
Challenge Groups and offer ongoing guidance and resources.
If you are concerned
for the youth in your community and are ready to be a true ELDER in their life then the Community Challenge is for you!
